The Oscar nominations for 2022 were announced on Tuesday, and the list makes Indians proud for a very specific reason. The documentary Writing with Fire has been nominated in the Best Documentary Feature category, making it the only Indian piece to win a place this year. Films such as Suriya’s Jai Bhim and Mohanlal’s Marakkar: Lion of the Arabian Sea also competed with 279 other eligible films but failed to make the finals.
The documentary, Writing With Fire, tells the story of female Dalit journalists who run a newspaper called Khabar Lahariya in a rural part of the country. It shows the transition of the newspaper from print to digital, while emphasizing topics such as women’s empowerment and the fight against patriarchy.
When the nominations were announced on Tuesday, Writing With Fire director Rintu Thomas shared a heartfelt video of their documentary’s name being included among the nominated films. The clip shows her celebrating the moment by cheering out loud as she shares hugs with family and co-director Sushmit Ghosh as they sat together in the living room. “Oh my God!!!! Writing With Fire has just been nominated for @TheAcademy Award. Oh my God!!!!!!!! #OscarNoms #WritingWithFire,” read the caption.

If you support the movie jai bhim for the right reasons, you will be cheering for it with the same enthusiasm #WritingWithFire † Because telling the stories of the dalit, bahujan, adivasi community is the main reason some of us looked to jai bhim in the first place.
