Tokyo Ghoul is one of those manga that is still talked about a lot to this day. For many, it was the starting point in this geek realm. Although the anime didn’t do well due to a rushed plot, it still got a lot of attention. In this article, let’s discuss the one-eyed king, a shadowy figure in the world of fantasy horror. The title is usually tied to revolutionary ideologies and is considered the leader of the Aogiri tree, a ghoul faction. The king is believed to be a very powerful half-ghoul and is stronger than all the other one-eyed ghouls. The Vasuki, or V, organization saw the king as its primary target. He had to be eliminated to restore the balance.
But in reality, the one-eyed king was not a single person for life. It was a title passed from one individual to another. Kishou Arima had held the title for much of the story until Ken Kaneki took it.
Let’s discuss it in detail.
The appearance and personality of the king
In the manga, the One-Eyed King’s original appearance was shown. He wears what looks like royal robes, with the Aogiri Tree society’s leaf-shaped insignia printed on the chest. His outfit is mostly gold, wears metal gloves, and wears a skull mask with only the ghoul’s eye visible. The mask is adorned with a golden crown.
As for his personality, the king is considered to be very charismatic, as is expected of a leader. The reason he formed Aogiri is to prove his belief that ghouls are superior and should be at the top of the food chain. He was able to collect dozens of them with his radical convictions.
Title holders (actual and rumored)
1. Eto Yoshimura
Eto’s reveal as a sinister character was a major story twist. For the first part of the story, Eto moonlighted as Sen Takatsuki, a best-selling horror novelist. It was later revealed that she was the founding leader of Aogiri Tree, a decade before entering the main storyline. Ever since she found the faction, she has been speculated by many to be the first one-eyed king. But Eto disputed the rumors and said she was the king’s co-conspirator and partner. She is, however, a half-ghoul.
Who knew that the kind-hearted manager of Anteiku Cafe was an SSS-ranked ghoul? Yoshimura was Eto’s father, whom he had with a human named Ukina. He thought his daughter was the real one-eyed king, so he took over to cover up his crimes. Later it became known as the One-Eyed Owl. After the owl removal operation, he is captured and his kakuhou is used to create artificial one-eyed ghouls.
3. Kishou Arima
Otherwise known as the CCG’s White Reaper, Kishou Arima was a Special Class Ghoul Investigator and considered a genius. His combat prowess and intellect proved useful in many great operations against ghouls, and he was revered in the CCG. However, Arima was later discovered to be conspiring with ghouls and was revealed as the mysterious One-Eyed King. He and Eto Yoshimura decided that Ken Kanaki should be the next king. He then mentored Kanaki and awarded him the title after his death. Eto described him as someone who kept the seat warm until the real king intervened.
Kaneki was the right person, according to Eto. Her special talent for mentally scanning a person’s psyche confirmed the two criteria she had for an ideal candidate: Kaneki had a strong desire to be needed by someone; he is a true masterpiece despite being an artificial one-eyed ghoul. Kaneki then proceeds to defeat Arima and Eto and calls himself the One-Eyed King. Subsequently, he created the ghoul organization named Goat.
Of course, he relinquished all titles and organizations at the end of the story. Kaneki made sure humans and ghouls could live together as one.
We have come to the end. Who was your favorite One-Eyed King?
