Bappi Lahiri passed away Tuesday night, leaving a void for all his fans around the world. The musician was 69 and breathed his last at the CritiCare Hospital in Mumbai. Bollywood celebrities including Kajol, Shaan and Alka Yagnik arrived and paid tribute to the late singer. In 2007, Bipasha Basu joked in an interview that she would like to steal the singer’s jewelry and his reaction to it was priceless. Scroll below to read the scoop.

Bappi Da, as his fans fondly called him, was a great singer and has been a part of the entertainment industry for over four decades. He sang some of the most popular songs of the Bollywood industry including ‘Yaad A Raha Hai,’ Tamma Tamma Loge, ‘Yaar Bina Chain Kaha Re’ and ‘Oh La La’ just to name a few.

In 2007, Bipasha Basu praised Bappi Lahiri in an interview with Bombay Times, calling him a “great person.” She added: “And every time I see him I want to rob him of his jewelry. He wears such beautiful gold jewelry; it’s full of these little gods, and that’s something I absolutely love.”

Later, in response to Bipasha Basu’s comment about him, Bappi Lahiri said in an interview: “She is very sweet. Woh aise Maange, main de dunga. Chori karna nahi padega, le lo. I like her, she is very pretty and Bong.”

Meanwhile, Bappi Da’s family released a statement earlier today, which said: “It is a deeply sad moment for us. Our beloved Bappi Da left for a heavenly abode last midnight. Cremation will take place at mid-morning tomorrow upon arrival of Bappa From LA. We seek love and blessings for his soul. We’ll keep you posted.”
