The upcoming sci-fi disaster movie ‘Moonfall’ found its germ in a single idea that was later spun around to create a compelling story. The film’s director, Roland Emmerich, racked his gray matter around the theme of ‘What if’.
The film depicts the events that follow after the moon embarks on a deadly collision course to destroy Earth. A group of three individuals takes on the responsibility of fighting impossible odds to save the Earth.
He remembered the thought clouding Roland Emmerich’s mind before sitting down to write: ‘I thought that was an intriguing idea for a movie. What happens if this object falls to Earth?”
On how Roland Emmerich expanded the idea, he went on to say, “I was equally fascinated by the challenge of creating characters who go on a mission to the moon to save our planet, as well as the families left behind and struggling to survive the disasters associated with the collision course of the moon with the earth.”
Actress Halle Berry, who plays a former NASA astronaut, sheds light on what attracted her to her role in the film: “She’s a woman who survives in a man’s world. Fowler is very headstrong. I like these kinds of women and characters because she’s strong at her job, but she’s also a mother.”
She also revealed that the role was initially intended for a male actor, “Thanks to Roland for realizing that this can be a female character and still have the same impact.”
Actor Patrick Wilson, who has worked with Emmerich on his 2019 directorial ‘Midway’, spoke of his second collaboration with the director on ‘Moonfall’, “‘Moonfall’ is a great concept. I love sci-fi and don’t often get the chance to do it, so that was a big bonus.”
For British actor John Bradley, “Houseman is one of the cutest characters” he “has ever created.”
PVR Pictures and MVP Entertainment are releasing Moonfall, directed by Roland Emmerich, starring Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Charlie Plummer, Michael Pena and Donald Sutherland, out February 11.
