Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has now deactivated his Twitter account after receiving threatening messages to stop the release of his film ‘The Kashmir Files’.

He has posted a lengthy letter on his social media handle stating the reason and asking fans to support him.

Vivek Agnihotri wrote: “A lot of people are wondering if my Twitter account has been suspended. No, that’s not it. I deactivated it. Here’s why: Ever since I started #TheKashmirFiles’ campaign, Twitter Shadow banned me. My followers dropped drastically and most of my followers couldn’t see my tweets. Plus, my DM was full of vulgar and threatening messages (from you know who).”

He went on to say that he can handle all of these situations very well, but he thinks there could be some outside forces behind these threat messages.

“It’s not that I can’t handle such elements, but it seemed that there were a lot of Pakistani and Chinese bots. No matter how tough you are, it is a mental ordeal to be surrounded by such intense hatred and threats to your family. And all those fatwa, threats, abuses… for what?”

He added: “To make an honest film about the pain and suffering of our Kashmiri brothers and sisters? Are they upset that the truth is allowed to come out? The ugly world of social media has given power to many evil elements. And our silence gives them hope to succeed. #TheKashmirFiles breaks that silence. Loud and clear.”

Vivek Agnihotri explained how in his film he has tried to bring out the truth about what happened in Kashmir and denounce terrorism.

‘I have always spoken to the enemies of India. #The KashmirFiles is an attempt to expose the inhumane terrorism that has destroyed India’s most sacred land, Shiva and Saraswati. And now religious terrorism is permeating mainland India. That’s why they want people like me to be silenced.”

Despite all these threats, he claimed that he will continue to speak the truth.

“I always speak for those who cannot be heard. I have exposed many falsehoods and fake stories of anti-India Urban Naxals. They want to silence me. But I know full well that silence helps in tragic events such as the genocide in Kashmir. They need to know that I cannot be silenced. Thank you to all my followers and fans for your love and support. Love. Always.VRA”

‘The Kashmir Files’ is a true story, based on video interviews of the first-generation victims of the persecution that experienced Kashmiri Pandits leading to their exodus.

Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, the exodus drama features Mithun Chakraborty, Anupam Kher, Darshan Kumaar, Pallavi Joshi and Chinmay Mandlekar.

Produced by Zee Studios and Tej Narayan Agarwal, Abhishek Agarwal, Pallavi Joshi and Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, ‘The Kashmir Files’ is set to release in theaters on March 11.
