The stories are separated into different genres. Each genre has its own set of themes and concepts, creating subgenres. Likewise, Anime has a lot of themes and concepts that make the story interesting. One of the most popular themes and concepts in anime is that of time travel. Thermae Romae Novae brings out this theme perfectly in its history. Although this story has already been adapted into an anime as well as a live-action movie, it was not very famous. However, Netflix had announced that this story would be getting a new Anime adaptation which made anime viewers anticipate the show. Recently, they released a trailer as well as a visual teaser for the upcoming anime.
Thermae Romae Novae, originally a manga by Mari Yamazaki, was published from 2008 to 2013. Serialization of the anime begins in 2012, with 6 episodes, including OVAs and ONAs. Thermae Romae Novae combines Roman history, architecture and time travel with many comic scenes.
Thermae Romae Novae has an interesting protagonist:
While this anime isn’t exactly an Isekai anime, the main protagonist, Lucius, is taken from the world he knows and placed in a futuristic world. Lucius is a Roman architect whose way of thinking is different from his peers at the Architectus. He is therefore expelled. However, Roman Emperor Hadrian seeks out Lucius, as he wants him to make public baths so people can communicate, build friendships, and live in peace. Lucius begins to think of ways to build a bathhouse when he accidentally slips. Interestingly, he slips back in time and finds himself in a bathhouse in modern Japan.
Imagine if Shakespeare were to visit the world today and come across a mechanical pencil, it would blow his mind! Likewise, Lucius is intrigued by the world he currently finds himself in. When an anime character is “isekai’d”, they usually end up in a magical world. For Lucius, a human from ancient Rome, technology is magic. He becomes interested in everything around him, including new self-cleaning toilet bidet technology, which ends up creating a series of comedic scenes. However, what interests him the most are Japan’s bathhouses as he tries to learn its architecture that he can use in his time. Along with discovering new things and technology, he also experiences romance by meeting a woman named Satsuki. In short, this anime will give us a whole set of binge-worthy events.
