There has been a stir across the country after Muslim girls were banned from taking an exam for refusing to take off their hijab. The incident took place in Udupi and the case sparked outrage from across the country. While the case is pending at the Karnataka High Court, even an international star like Bella Hadid has criticized the act.
Now former actress Zaira Wasim took to her Facebook and shared her thoughts on the matter. In a lengthy note, the Dangal star began: “The inherited idea that hijab is a choice is misinformed. It is often a construction of convenience or ignorance. Hijab is not a choice but an obligation in Islam. Likewise, a woman who performs the hijab carries an obligation imposed on her by the God she loves and to which she has submitted.”
Zaira Wasim continued: “I, as a woman who wears the hijab, with gratitude and humility, I hate and oppose this whole system where women are stopped and harassed for merely fulfilling a religious obligation.”
“Stacking this bias against Muslim women and setting up systems where they would have to choose between education and hijab or give up either is an absolute injustice. You try to force them to make a very specific choice that fuels your agenda and then criticize them while they are trapped in what you have built. There is no other way to encourage them to choose differently. What is this but a prejudice with people affirming it, acting in support of it? Plus, it’s even worse to build a facade that this is all being done in the name of empowerment when it’s quite the opposite. Sad,” Zaira Wasim concluded.
