Mohabbatein’s storyline mainly revolves around the relationship between Raj and Narayan. For 25 years, Narayan was the strict headmaster of Gurukul, a prestigious all-boys college. Narayan emphasizes honor, tradition, and discipline, and believes in bringing out the best in his students with these qualities. He threatens to expel any student caught having an affair as he is particularly intolerant of romance and disdains entertainment. Three Gurukul students, Sameer, Vicky and Karan fall in love, despite these rules. Sameer falls in love with his childhood friend Sanjana, Vicky is attracted to a student from the nearby girls’ college named Ishika, and Karan falls in love with a young widow, whom he sees alone one night at a train station named Kiran.

Raj is hired by Narayan, as Gurukul’s new music teacher. Raj decides to spread love all over Gurukul, as he believes in the power of love. He encourages Sameer, Vicky, and Karan to persist and stay true to their loves, as he sympathizes with their struggles. Raj tells them his love story and although she is dead, he imagines that she accompanies him every day.

One day, Raj throws a party to which he invites the girls’ middle school students, as part of his plan. Narayan threatens to fire him after learning about the party. At this point, Raj tells her that he was the one who was in love with his daughter when he was a college student over ten years ago. Megha had committed suicide after Narayan summarily expelled Raj from college.

Raj then tells Narayan that he won’t be able to stop her from filling the college with love, reversing the zero tolerance policy on romance to honor Megha’s memory. Narayan then takes this as a challenge and allows her to stay in college. Narayan retaliates by tightening the college rules, after Sameer, Vicky, and Karan defeat Sanjana, Ishika, and Kiran respectively.

Narayan expels the three students, in a last ditch attempt to preserve the college atmosphere he has built for 25 years, as the student body continues to defy the rules, encouraged by Raj. Raj then accuses Narayan of causing his own daughter’s death with his love intolerance and states that they did nothing wrong in falling in love when he speaks on their behalf.

Raj also explains that even though Narayan thinks he won the challenge, he feels Narayan lost because his daughter left him, and now Raj, who considered him an elder, is also leaving him. Narayan then realizes that his strict no-romance policy is wrong, as Raj’s words hurt him. After that, he appoints Raj as his successor when he resigns as headmaster of Gurukul and apologizes to the student body. The two then reconcile and Raj accepts his offer.
