HBO Season 9 Episode 2, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, will be released soon. In this, British comedian and commentator John Oliver will once again deliver his liberal take on talking points on all aspects of current affairs. From gun and prison reform to pop culture and historical events. If you’re not familiar with this show, it’s a comedy program where Oliver introduces some hot topics and expands on them with sarcastic remarks.
Each week, Oliver covers topics from the previous week, using his opinions to get millions of Americans to agree with a Labor-leaning Englishman who has a knack for ridiculing the working class of the country where he resides. What did Britons think of the news and politics last week? These events only affected Americans and had no impact on the United Kingdom. Nevertheless, he makes comments about them as if they were in his territory and under his control. Far from balanced and fair, and certainly not satirical. Oliver’s political views are often disguised propaganda rallies disguised as commentary. Let’s see what he has to say anyway.
Last Week Season 9 Episode 1 Recap Tonight With John Oliver
The episode kicks off with John Oliver shamelessly praising himself. After that, he begins to denigrate the grassroots, national movement that embodies Ottawa truckers’ protests against COVID mandates by employing far-flung talking points: for example, saying that the truckers’ association disavows the protests. As if a popular movement needed the approval of bureaucratic unions. But that’s just John Oliver’s liberal talking points speaking right there.
The main topic here for this episode are schools and critical race theory. This is a series of videos where Oliver angrily criticizes American parents concerned about indoctrination in schools. Here we have a British man who has no say in American politics preaching a talking point that this concern is fabricated. To support his speech, he makes fun of critics by their appearance. After that, he quotes Fox News by the numbers and tries to convincingly present that the liberal, hateful version of America – again in the eyes of a British Labor supporter – is the right way.
What’s more amazing about Oliver’s utterly propaganda rants about race is that he wants to interpret Martin Luther King’s words by quoting Dr. King out of context about a deep thought he had about the middle class American at a time when acceptance of the civil rights movement was a new idea. The episode ends with a kind of “Why can’t we just get along?” a kind of idea that immediately loses its value as – again – Oliver begins to disparage the opposing camp rather than find common ground.
