French actress Isabelle Huppert, who received the Berlinale’s honorary Golden Bear, will not attend the prestigious film festival because she tested positive for Covid in Paris.

The festival organizers confirmed her absence to Variety on Monday evening.

A statement from the Berlinale read: “Unfortunately, Isabelle Huppert tested positive for the coronavirus in Paris today and therefore she will not be able to attend the Berlin International Film Festival.”

The statement further read: “While Isabelle Huppert briefed the festival, she emphasized that she feels very committed to the Berlinale and wants to participate in any way she can to also support her latest film ‘A Propos de Joan’.”

Berlinale Artistic Director Carlo Chatrian explained that because Huppert “doesn’t feel sick”, the festival will go ahead with the planned ceremony on Tuesday to honor the “Elle” actor with his lifetime achievement award. Huppert is participating via a live link from Paris. The ceremony will be followed by a screening of ‘A Propos de Joan’, in the Berlinale Special Gala section.

Although the above event could very well take place, the event ‘Berlinale Hommage: In Conversation with Isabelle Huppert’, organized as part of the Berlinale Talents program, is cancelled. The 2022 Berlin Film Festival has suffered greatly from the rise of the new wave of the pandemic, and Huppert’s absence adds to the list of problems for the Berlinale.

The festival previously had to deal with a number of unfortunate incidents, including technical problems during the opening film, Francois Ozon’s ‘Peter von Kant’ and a break-in at the EFM studio, where important equipment was stolen overnight. The festival organizers recently confirmed that the festival has recorded 54 positive COVID cases from 2,700 tests.
