When you’re in the middle of a Zoom video meeting at home and your cat suddenly decides to howl for his food, you’ll want to quickly mute your audio. In that case, you have a choice: you can either grab your mouse or touchpad and start looking for the “Mute” button or you can use a quick keyboard shortcut to instantly shut off that sound.
Zoom has a long list of keyboard shortcuts that you can use before or during a video conference. By using these keyboard shortcuts, you can quickly join a meeting; mute and unmute the audio; start, pause and stop recording; switch view from Speaker (a large image of the person speaking) to Gallery (different images of the same size regardless of who is speaking); and performing various other tasks.
You can easily find a list of those tasks and the shortcuts you can use in your Zoom app:
- Go to Zoom settings by clicking the gear in the top right corner
- From the left menu, select “Keyboard Shortcuts”
The shortcuts are grouped into four categories: Meeting, Chat, Phone, and General. To see all the available shortcuts, make sure to access each category by clicking the arrow to the right of the category name.
A note: the keys you press on a Mac or Windows PC will be different, but whatever platform you’re using, those shortcuts can be very useful if you’re on a Zoom call on a laptop.
