‘Dream Horse’ Filming Locations: Is The Shoot Really Set In Wales?


Dream Horse is a 2020 sports comedy-drama directed by Euros Lyn and based on the life story of Neil McKay. The film stars Toni Collette, Owen Teale, Damian Lewis, Steffan Rhodri, Joanna Page, Karl Johnson, Anthony O’Donnell, Nicholas Farrell and Siân Phillips, and is based on the true story of Dream Alliance, a champion of the Grand Welsh National. Dark Horse: The Incredible True Story of Dream Alliance was previously the subject of a documentary. So where is Dream Horse filmed? Dream Horse had its international premiere on January 24, 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival and was distributed by Bleecker Street in the United States on May 21, 2021 and Warner Bros. The story is about Dream Alliance, a strange racehorse bred by Welsh bartender Jan Vokes. Jan persuades his neighbors to contribute their earnings to Dream’s fundraising efforts so he can compete with the racing elite despite his lack of funds and experience. Dream fights his way through the ranks with tenacity and perseverance, eventually winning the Welsh Grand National and recouping the band’s investment. Where is “Dream Horse” filmed?

Almost all of Dream Horse was filmed in Wales and England. The component country, located in the southwestern corner of the United Kingdom, is known for its Celtic culture and unique Welsh language. England, on the other hand, is known worldwide for its pop music, tea, football, food, rich history and historic universities. Filming for director Euros Lyn took place in a number of locations across these two countries, so let’s learn more about the different filming locations.

The place where Jan Vokes bred his horse

Blaenavon is one of the filming locations for ‘Dream Horse’. It is located in the county borough of Torfaen. Production on the biographical comedy-drama began in May this year. Blaenavon took the place of Cefn Forest, where Jan Vokes’ horse was bred. As a result, in mid-May 2019 Broad Street, Forgeside Road, Commercial Street, Ivor Street, Market Street and William Street were closed to the public.

Many exterior sequences, including those in which Dream is seen as a foal playing in the field, were filmed here. Local residents were also used as extras in many key “Dream Horse” scenes.

Chepstow was also used to film the film. The scenes in which Jan and Brian Vokes meet for the first time were filmed in this town located in Monmouthshire. Additionally, Chepstow Racecourse, located at Saint Lawrence Road, Chepstow NP16 6BE, was used to film the film’s first and final races, which surely capture pivotal moments.

Rhymney’s Brewery Club is the interior of the workers’ club where Jan works in the film and first meets Howard.

Sully, Vale of Glamorgan

The interiors and exteriors of Jan and Brian’s house, as well as the interior of Jan’s parents’ house in an empty cottage, were filmed here.

Glanusk Estate, Crickhowell

The stunning grounds, tower bridge and stable yard of the Glanusk Estate would be familiar to any seasoned Green Man Festival attendee, and they are given a showing as Dream Alliance is escorted to meet Philip Hobbs in the film, acting as stables for the trainer of horses.



On an estate near the top of the village, Howard and Angela’s home was photographed inside and out. It was here that the couple – Damian Lewis and Joanna Page – had another argument over Howard’s union involvement.

The Well of Taff

At the local workers’ club, the crucial union meeting took place. The scene was shot in the committee room (the billiard room) and the syndicate decided to make Dream Alliance’s dream come true there.

Merthyr Tydfil Cooperative

In the film, Jan works at the co-op, but in real life she worked (and still works) at her local Asda. The coop used for exterior and interior is located in Pentrebach.
