Bungie wants to make your Destiny 2 weapons more important in The Witch Queen

Bungie is getting ready to launch what could be one of its biggest expansions Lot 2 that we’ve ever seen later this month, The Witch Queen. While the expansion will follow Savath√Ľn’s story, it also introduces new exotic weapons, weapon crafting, and major changes to the Lot 2 sandbox.

Bungie is previewing some of those weapon changes today, as well as detailing how Lot 2 players can create their own weapons in The Witch Queen. Early on, players of the new expansion will have the opportunity to forge a new Glaive weapon type, including all the materials needed to craft this original weapon.

Crafting a weapon in Lot 2 allows players to choose the barrels, frames, and weapon attributes of a subset of weapons and archetypes without all the RNG needed for a perfect weapon drop. A selection of new weapons will be available initially, and Bungie says more will be added in the future. Crafting involves finding cartridges (essentially weapon blueprints), collecting materials needed for crafting, and then leveling up your new weapon by using it to defeat enemies.

The faster you level up a weapon, the more enhanced traits you can unlock. This includes improved weapon ability stats, traits, and bonuses. It’s much more like how you leveled weapons in the original Destination game, with a focus on battles to unlock perks. Bungie also introduces a reminder system with activity-specific trackers and cosmetic flair for weapons.

While we don’t have the full list of weapons that support this new crafting system, you can craft the upcoming Osteo Striga exotic submachine gun and the three class-specific exotic Glaives. Existing weapons you currently own are not supported in this weapon building system, so this feels like a steady push from Bungie to Lot 2 players to phase out their own weapons in favor of manufactured weapons in 2022. That’s a lot better than making existing weapons useless.

The Lot 2 sandbox is also getting some major ups and downs for The Witch Queen. Bungie has experimented with pursuit and top weapons from past operations, with unique abilities that were often overpowered. In the witch queen, it instead moves towards original traits, which will appear as an additional third perk on new weapon drops. You get unique copies depending on where the gun comes from. In Trials of Osiris, the endgame player-versus-player activity, Alacrity’s advantage will increase reload, stability, aim assist, and even range if all your teammates are dead and you try to save the round alone. It’s very similar to the Celerity, but now with a range and aim assist improvement.

Similarly, Nightfall assault weapons drop with Stunning Recovery, a perk that partially fills your warehouse and restores health and improves recovery. That can make finishing a champion a little easier or aid in survival, just like ducking behind cover. The global loot pool is also being replaced by 12 new weapons in the style of the year one foundry weapon sets. Each of these foundries also has unique origins.

In total, Bungie promises a whopping 42 new Legendary weapons and all returning Trials, Iron Banner and Nightfall weapons. 14 provenance attributes are shipped with The Witch Queenwith more over the seasons in 2022. Compared to the mediocre loot in Beyond the lightthere’s a lot to play for in The Witch Queen.

It wouldn’t be a Destination sandbox update without any nerfs, buffs and changes. I would highly recommend reading all the latest Bungie’s This Week At Bungie (TWAB) for all the sandbox and weapon changes coming up destination 2, but here are the big ones PvP:

  • Players now only drop one special ammo on death, and the maximum you can pick up is one for shotgun, fusion rifles, or sniper rifles. You can still use scavenger mods to boost this, but you won’t get five or six more shots.
  • Tap the trigger, the perk available on the Main Ingredient Fusion rifle sold by Xur, gets nerfed to make it much less stable, so it’s less overpowered in PvP.
  • Felwinter’s liethe shotgun that still dominates in PvP gets a 15 percent wider spread angle, which sounds like a hefty nerf to make it less lethal.
  • chaperone, the exotic shotgun favored by controller players will see its passive range buff decrease from 2 meters to 0.5 meters.
  • The story of the dead man a total nuisance in PvP, is that the hip-fire rate of the catalytic converter is reduced from 150 rpm to 130 rpm. This should make it harder to spam hip-fire shots from across a map.
  • Lorentz Driver and Arbalest will recoil more to make it easier to counter them, but I’m not convinced this will help given the massive amounts of aiming aid these linear fusion rifles have.

The Witch Queen expansion launches on February 22 on Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Stadia.
