Blizzard is planning a new mobile game for Warcraft

Nestled in today’s Activision Blizzard quarterly report (which, curiously, was delivered as a press release and not a traditional phone call, ostensibly due to its impending Microsoft acquisition and possibly the myriad other things going on there) is the news that Blizzard is working on a new warcraftt mobile title slated for release in 2022.

According to the press release, “Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the” warcraftt franchise in 2022, including […] get a brand new mobile warcraft content in the hands of players for the first time.” The press release does not go into detail about the new game or when we can expect more. For now we only know that it is warcraftand it will be mobile.

The news neatly coincides with the revenue report showing that consumers have spent more than a billion dollars on… Call of Duty mobile in 2021 and Candy Crush‘s continued dominance of the app store revenue leaderboards.

Interestingly, Activision Blizzard is planning this Warcraft mobile title for this year. Diablo Immortal – a diablo mobile game – has been in development since its announcement in 2018 and is also slated for release in 2022. The seemingly close gap between announcement and theoretical release could be a lesson we can learn Overwatch 2‘s premature disclosure. It is also possible that this mobile game is not as comprehensive as Diablo Immortal and therefore does not require the same amount of development time. Anyway, between this sudden news of a warcraft mobile game and the announcement of an all-new Blizzard-developed survival game, the company is putting its best foot forward against its (pending) Microsoft overlords.
