‘Bheemla Nayak’ singer and folk artist from Telangana, Darshanam Mogulaiah, receives the Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to the arts.

Mogulaiah, which was drafted by popular Telugu star and Jana Sena Party founder Pawan Kalyan, has preserved the art of playing the 12-stage kinnera, an indigenous stringed instrument not used in the music industry. The instrument is mainly associated with Dalit and tribal communities, such as the Dakkalis, the Madigas and the Chenchus.

As this art form is about to die, folk singers like Mogulaiah are the only hope of keeping it alive.

Mogulaiah comes from a Madiga family. He grew up in the village of Ausalikunta in the Lingala Mandal in the Nagarkurnool district of Telangana, along the vast Nallamala forests. A fifth-generation kinnera artist, Mogulaiah, 62, has been playing the instrument since the age of eight,

Identifying this unique art form, Pawan Kalyan had recommended Mogulaiah to music director SS Thaman for the title track of the upcoming big-ticket movie ‘Bheemla Nayak’.

Thaman composed the song with Mogulaiah, who has received donations from Tollywood bigwigs to fulfill his dream of preserving and promoting his beloved instrument.
